Stefan Knittel, born in 1956, followed the first BMW Formula 2 appearances in the sixties on television, but at the time he was more interested in two-wheeled racing machines. Later he was able to run his hobby into a career and wrote about motorbikes during his time as a journalist and writer.
Trough an interest in motorbikes, especially the engines, he kept coming across links to racing cars, too. Knittel wrote and translated books on the history of Grand Prix racing. After this, he studied the history of the BMW company and its models for several years, an education which finally culminated in a definitive work on motorbikes carrying the blue and white badge. Since then he has worked as a freelancer for the company in an number of different positions, and many years ago he got to know Paul Rosche. Together they decided to recount the history of BMW motorsport. Their book, BMW Formula Racing 1966-2000, was published coincide with the re-entry of BMW into F1. They had to shift trough much more material for the second volume, which was to document BMW’s commitment to touring and sports cars.
Suitable illustrations had to be selected from thousands of different images and contemporary witnesses had to be interviewed. While work being undertaken for the long-awaited book about the undisputed Number One in touring car racing for many decades, the success story continued…
