Drivetrain error + rattling noise, anyone experienced this?

Post by Muco58 »

Hi everyone,

Today I got the following message on my BMW:

Drivetrain – Do not switch off the engine. If the engine is switched off, restarting may not be possible. Drive to the nearest BMW Service.

A few days ago, I first noticed a rattling noise. The car shifts smoothly, drives well, and performs perfectly on the highway. However, when driving slowly (around 10–30 km/h on rough roads), I sometimes feel a wobbling motion, like the car is slightly rocking side to side.

The noise is present both during electric driving and when the engine is running.
After today’s warning, I drove home, shut the car off, and restarted it — the warning was gone and everything seemed normal again.

Has anyone experienced something like this before?
I’m planning to take the car to a garage tomorrow to have it diagnosed and scanned for errors. Any advice or experience would be much appreciated!

One more thing: a few months ago, the car was scanned and one of the battery modules in the high-voltage pack was found to be “cooked” and needs replacement. I haven’t done that yet because it’s quite expensive. I’m currently looking for a way to get it repaired as affordably as possible, since many shops seem to overcharge heavily for this kind of work.

Any info, maintenance tips, or tricks are very welcome!
